MTS file will be generated on camcorder after recording, but it will be changed to M2TS after importing to computer. Simply speaking, MTS is used for recording video while M2TS is for storing video in a Blu-ray disc.

In addition to supporting AVCHD format, M2TS used on Blu-ray Discs can support any one of H.262/MPEG-2 Part 2, H.264/MPEG-4 AVC or SMPTE VC-1 for video compression and Dolby Digital, DTS or uncompressed Linear PCM for audio compression.

5. MTS vs M2TS: Filename and Directory Structure

AVCHD is forced to use the 8.3 naming convention for saving the files located in the following sample directory.

(e.g. \AVCHD\BDMV\STREAM\00001.MTS)

While Blu-ray Discs can use long filenames and places M2TS files in the following sample directory.

(e.g. \BDMV\STREAM\00001.m2ts or \BDAV\STREAM\00001.m2ts)
