MPV File: How to Play and Convert MPV to MP4

The .mpv extension is associated with MPEG video elementary streams, commonly MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 video. Elementary streams carry one type of encoded media data rather than a complete audio-video presentation, which is why an MPV file may be accompanied by a separate audio file in some recording, authoring, or editing workflows. Before converting, try opening the MPV file with VLC media player. VLC supports MPEG elementary streams as well as MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 video, so it is a good first choice for this older file type.

Step 1. Open VLC and choose Media > Open File > All Files, or simply drag the .mpv file into VLC.

Step 2. If Windows has no app associated with .mpv, right-click the file, choose Open with, and select VLC.

Step 3. If the video plays but you hear no sound, check whether the source folder contains a separate audio file. The MPV video stream itself may not include audio.

If VLC still cannot open the file, or if you need to use the video on a phone, TV, browser, presentation, or editing program, convert it to a common format such as MP4 with the method below.
