If you have used GoPro to shoot videos, you must’ve noticed that there are three different types of files generated in your SD card every time you finished the shooting. One of them is the LRV file (The other two are MP4 and THM files, in which the latter one stands for thumbnail image). You could see that the LRV file is much bigger than the THM file but relatively smaller than the MP4 file. And that has prompted you to wonder what these .lrv files are. Well, here is the answer.
LRV is short for Low Resolution Video. It is created in parallel with the MP4 file to store video recorded by the GoPro device. Yet, compared with the HD MP4 file, LRV file is in a much lower quality (in 240P at 29.97 fps). You can open the LRV file in any media player, such as VLC, Windows Media Player, QuickTime Player, etc.
The main usages for LRV files are for previewing on GoPro mobile applications and editing on low-end computers (You can swap the low-res video with the original HD MP4 video before rendering). In this way, your device can handle the GoPro file much smoother.
As has been mentioned before, the LRV file stores video content. The video is encoded in MPEG-4 with no encryption added. It is, in essence, an MP4 file wrapped in the LRV container. So yes, you can convert the LRV file to MP4. And I’ll cover more detail in the next part.
The way to convert the LRV file to MP4 is easy. Simply renaming the file extension “.lrv” as “.mp4” and there you go.
Tips: If you couldn’t see the file extension, open “File Explorer” > switch to “View” tab > enable “File name extensions.”
If you still can’t play the renamed MP4 GoPro file, chances are that the file is broken. However, if you want to try another way to convert the LRV file to MP4 or other video formats, or you want to convert and compress GoPro MP4 videos, the following method can help you.
