Can PS5 Play DVDs? PS5/PS4/PSP DVD Playback Explained

Powerful gaming performance aside, PlayStation consoles can also work as home media players. But DVD playback is not the same on every model. The PS5 console with a disc drive can play DVDs directly, while a PS5 Digital Edition needs either a compatible add-on disc drive or a converted digital video file.

This guide explains how DVD playback works on PS5, PS4, PS4 Pro, and PSP, why some discs fail to play, and how to convert your own DVDs to a PlayStation-friendly format for USB or Memory Stick playback.

Can PS5 Play DVDs?

Yes, but it depends on your PS5 model. A PS5 console with a built-in Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive can play DVD discs. Insert the DVD into the disc slot, open Disc Player from the media home, and the movie should start as long as the disc is supported and region-compatible.

The original PS5 Digital Edition (CFI-1000 model group) cannot play DVDs because it has no optical drive and does not support disc-based games or media. For this model, the practical workaround is to convert your DVD to a PS5-supported video file and play it from a USB drive.

For newer models, the answer is a little different. Some PS5 Digital Edition consoles from the CFI-2000/CFI-2100 model groups and the PS5 Pro model group can use Sony's compatible add-on Disc Drive, sold separately. After the drive is paired through the Internet, it can read 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs, Blu-ray discs, and DVDs. Without a disc drive, however, they still cannot read physical DVDs.

For USB playback, PS5 supports a limited set of video formats, mainly MKV (H.264/AAC), MP4 (H.264/AAC), and WebM (VP9/Opus), with a maximum video resolution of 3840 x 2160. That is why converting DVD to a compatible MP4 or PS5 preset is usually the safest option.

PS5, PS4, PS4 Pro, and PSP: DVD Playback Explained

PS5 with disc drive: It can play DVD-ROM, finalized DVD-R/RW, and DVD+R/RW discs directly. It also supports Blu-ray and Ultra HD Blu-ray discs, so it can work as a convenient living-room movie player.

PS5 Digital Edition: The original digital-only model cannot read DVDs at all. Newer digital models can use a compatible add-on Disc Drive, but only after the drive is connected and paired. If you do not have a disc drive, convert the DVD to MP4, MKV, or WebM and play the file from USB.

PS4 and PS4 Pro: Both can play DVD and Blu-ray discs. The important difference is that a PS4 console must enable the disc playback feature over the Internet the first time you play a DVD or Blu-ray. After that one-time activation, it does not need to stay online for normal disc playback.

PSP: PSP cannot play DVD discs directly because it has no DVD drive. It used UMD discs for physical media and Memory Stick Duo/PRO Duo for storage. To watch a DVD movie on PSP, convert the DVD to a PSP-friendly video first, usually MP4 with H.264/MPEG-4 video and AAC audio.

Why Won't My DVD Play on PlayStation?

If your PS5 or PS4 has a disc drive but still refuses to play a DVD, the cause is usually one of the following:

1. Wrong console model or missing drive. PS5 Digital Edition and PSP cannot read physical DVDs without extra help. A PS5 Slim Digital Edition or PS5 Pro also needs a compatible external Disc Drive to read DVD discs.

2. First-time setup is not finished. PS4 and PS4 Pro need an Internet connection once to enable Blu-ray/DVD playback. Newer PS5 add-on Disc Drives also require Internet pairing during setup.

3. DVD region mismatch. Many commercial DVDs are region-locked. For example, a Region 2 DVD may not play on a Region 1 console, even though the console can play DVDs in general.

4. Unsupported or unsafe disc type. PS5 and PS4 do not support CD playback, BD-RE ver.1.0, BD-R/RE XL, or DVDs that have not been finalized. Avoid 8 cm discs, non-circular discs, cracked discs, repaired discs, or discs with stickers and paper labels.

5. Disc quality, scratches, or unusual encoding. Dust, fingerprints, scratches, poor burning quality, recording-device differences, or some copy-protection/authoring methods may stop a movie from loading correctly.

6. USB format confusion. A DVD folder, VIDEO_TS folder, or ISO image copied to a USB drive is not the same as a PS5/PS4 supported video file. Media Gallery and Media Player need a compatible video file, such as MP4 H.264/AAC.

Why DVD Won't Play on PlayStation

When direct playback fails because of region code, unsupported disc authoring, or a disc-free console, a digital copy is often easier to manage. Here I recommend WonderFox DVD Ripper Pro, which can make digital copies of personal DVD collections and provide ready-made profiles for PlayStation devices. Only 3 simple steps are required.

Before start, insert a homemade or copy-protected DVD disc into the DVD-ROM drive connected to your computer.

Step 1 - Load DVD Content

Install and runInstall and run the software, click "DVD Disc" and select the DVD drive letter, then press "OK" to scan the DVD content.

During the process, it will detect the DVD structure, remove common DVD restrictions, and select the main movie title automatically. You can also manually pick another title, audio track, or subtitle track if needed.

Step 1. Format the USB drive as exFAT or FAT32 and create a folder in the root directory.

Step 2. Put the converted MP4, MKV, AVI, MPEG-2 PS/TS, AVCHD, or XAVC S file into that folder. If you are not sure which format to use, MP4 H.264/AAC is the easiest choice.

Step 3. On PS4, open Media Player from the content area, select USB, and choose the video file to play.

Note: If this is the first time you use PS4 as a disc player, connect it to the Internet once to enable Blu-ray/DVD playback. This activation is for physical discs, not for normal USB video playback.

FAQs

Q1. Can PS5 Digital Edition play DVDs?

The original PS5 Digital Edition cannot play DVDs because it has no disc drive. Newer digital PS5 models may support a separately sold Disc Drive after Internet pairing. If you do not have a compatible drive, you need to convert the DVD to a supported video file and play it from USB.

Q2. Does PS5 play DVDs without Internet?

A PS5 with a built-in disc drive can generally play supported DVDs directly. If you use a compatible add-on Disc Drive with a newer digital PS5 model or PS5 Pro, the drive needs Internet access for the initial pairing process.

Q3. Can PS4 and PS4 Pro play DVDs?

Yes. PS4 and PS4 Pro can play DVD and Blu-ray discs, but the disc playback feature must be enabled online the first time you use it. Region mismatch, scratches, unfinalized discs, or unsupported disc types can still cause playback errors.

Q4. Can PSP play DVDs?

No. PSP has no DVD drive. It can play compatible videos from a Memory Stick, so the workable method is to convert DVD movies to PSP-friendly MP4 first.

Q5. Can I copy a VIDEO_TS folder or ISO to USB and play it on PS5?

No. PS5 Media Gallery and PS4 Media Player are designed to play supported video files, not DVD folders or ISO images. Convert the DVD to MP4, MKV, WebM, or another supported format first.

Final Words...

Will PS5 play DVDs? If your PS5 has a disc drive, yes. If you have a PS5 Digital Edition without a compatible drive, a PS4 DVD region issue, a PS4 Pro DVD playback error, or a PSP that can only play files from storage, converting the DVD to a PlayStation-friendly video is the practical workaround.

WonderFox DVD Ripper Pro helps simplify the whole workflow with ready-made PS5, PS4, and PSP profiles, subtitle/audio track options, common DVD handling, and fast processing. DownloadDownload it and make your own DVD movies easier to watch on PlayStation devices.
