OBS Studio is a free, open-source program for video recording and live streaming on Windows, macOS, and Linux. Instead of giving you a single fixed recording mode, OBS builds a recording from Scenes and Sources. A scene can contain your display, one app window, a game, webcam, capture card, images, browser overlays, and one or more audio sources.

That flexibility is the main reason OBS is so useful, but it also explains why problems such as a black preview or missing audio are usually caused by the selected source, device, track, encoder, or output setting rather than by the Start Recording button itself.

For a first recording, keep the setup simple: one scene, one main video source, only the audio sources you actually need, and a short test recording before a long session. OBS itself strongly recommends testing your settings for a few minutes first.

How to Record with OBS Studio Step by Step

Step 1 - Install OBS and Run the Auto-Configuration Wizard

Download OBS Studio from the official OBS website, install it, and open the program. On the first launch, OBS normally offers the Auto-Configuration Wizard. If you skipped it, open Tools > Auto-Configuration Wizard.

If your main goal is local recording, choose the option that prioritizes recording rather than streaming. The wizard uses your hardware and intended use to suggest a workable baseline. You can fine-tune the settings later.

Step 2 - Create a Scene and Add the Right Video Source

In the Scenes dock, create a new scene or use the default one. Then click the + button in the Sources dock and choose what you want to record.

Display Capture: records an entire monitor. It is convenient for tutorials that move between several apps, but it can also capture notifications or private windows.

Window Capture: records one application window. Use it when you want to keep the rest of the desktop out of the recording.

Game Capture: is available on Windows and is generally the preferred source for 3D games because it is designed to hook directly into games with good performance.

Video Capture Device: is for a webcam, USB camera, or capture card.

After adding a source, select it in the preview and resize or position it as needed. If the source is off-canvas, right-click it and choose Transform > Fit to Screen.

Step 3 - Set Up Desktop, Game, and Microphone Audio

Look at the Audio Mixer. If the level meters move when your computer or microphone makes sound, OBS is receiving that source. If they do not move, open Settings > Audio and select the correct devices, or add a dedicated audio source in the Sources dock.

On Windows 10 version 2004 or later and Windows 11, OBS can capture audio from individual applications. In current OBS versions, you can use Application Audio Capture (BETA), or enable Capture Audio (BETA) inside a compatible Game Capture or Window Capture source. Step 4 - Choose Recording Format, Quality, Encoder, Resolution, and FPS

Open Settings > Output. For most beginners, Simple Output Mode is enough. Set a recording path you can easily find and choose a recording quality that matches your needs and computer performance.

Recording format: OBS recommends MKV for normal recording because an interrupted recording is less likely to make the whole file unusable. If you need MP4 for an editor or upload site, record to MKV first and use File > Remux Recordings afterward. You can also enable automatic remuxing in OBS settings.

Encoder: if your computer offers a supported hardware encoder such as NVIDIA NVENC, AMD, or Intel Quick Sync, it can reduce CPU encoding load. x264 is a software encoder and can still be useful when you specifically want CPU encoding.

Resolution and frame rate: go to Settings > Video. 1920Ă—1080 at 30 FPS is a sensible starting point for many tutorials and meetings. Use 60 FPS when motion smoothness matters, such as gameplay, and your system has enough headroom. If recording performance is poor, lowering the output resolution or frame rate is one of the most effective fixes.

Step 5 - Make a Short Test Recording

Click Start Recording in the Controls dock. Record for one or two minutes while reproducing the real workload: open the game, speak into the microphone, switch windows, or play the content you plan to capture. Then click Stop Recording.

Play the test file and check four things before a long session: the picture is visible, every required audio source can be heard, audio stays in sync, and OBS shows no dropped-render or encoding-overload warning. Fixing a short test is much easier than discovering a problem after an hour-long recording.

How to Make OBS Record Only Game Audio

The old workaround was to let OBS capture all desktop audio and then mute everything except the game. On current Windows versions, source-specific application audio is usually cleaner because OBS can capture the game directly.

Windows 10/11: Capture the Game Audio Source Directly

Step 1. Add a Game Capture source and select the game. If the source properties show Capture Audio (BETA), enable it. Otherwise, add Application Audio Capture (BETA) as a separate source and select the game window or executable.

Step 2. Open Settings > Audio and set global Desktop Audio to Disabled if you do not want sounds from other apps. Also disable or mute Mic/Aux if the recording should contain only game audio.

Step 3. Watch the Audio Mixer while the game plays. The game source meter should move, while other unwanted sources should remain muted or disabled.

Step 4. Make a short test recording. If the game uses separate processes for gameplay and voice chat, you may need another Application Audio Capture source or a virtual audio cable for the audio path that OBS cannot isolate automatically.

Common OBS Recording Problems and Fixes

When OBS fails, start with the part of the signal chain that is actually broken. A black picture is usually a source/capture problem. Silent recordings are usually an audio-source or track problem. Choppy video and an Encoding overloaded warning point to insufficient processing headroom. A generic recording error is more likely to involve the output path, encoder, driver, or installation.

1. OBS Records a Black Screen

Check the capture source first. Use Game Capture for supported Windows games, Window Capture for a specific app, and Display Capture for the whole desktop. Some games do not allow normal Game Capture hooks; running the game in borderless/windowed mode and using Window Capture can work better.

For games, try running OBS as administrator on Windows. OBS specifically recommends this for some games and it can also help performance. Disable conflicting overlays, FPS counters, capture utilities, or monitoring tools if Game Capture cannot hook into the game.

On laptops with multiple GPUs, make sure OBS and the game use the appropriate high-performance GPU for Game Capture. If the source exists but appears as a tiny point or sits outside the canvas, right-click it and choose Transform > Reset Transform, then Fit to Screen.

On macOS, confirm that OBS has the required Screen Recording permission in System Settings > Privacy & Security, then restart OBS after changing permission.

2. OBS Is Not Recording Audio

First look at the Audio Mixer. If a source meter does not move, OBS is not receiving that source. Select the correct device in Settings > Audio, add an Audio Input/Output Capture source, or use Application Audio Capture for a specific Windows app.

If the meter moves but the recorded file is silent, check Advanced Audio Properties and the recording tracks in Settings > Output. When using multiple tracks, remember that many ordinary players play only one audio track at a time. For a file that should play normally everywhere, send all essential sources to track 1, then use tracks 2-6 for isolated sources if you plan to edit them later.

Also check that the source is not muted, the OS has granted microphone permission, Bluetooth/headset devices have not changed after OBS started, and the selected playback/recording devices still match the devices you are actually using.

3. OBS Audio Is Out of Sync

Audio drift or a fixed delay can come from capture devices, mismatched sample rates, buffering, or a heavily loaded system. Start by keeping OBS and your audio devices on a consistent sample rate, commonly 48 kHz. On Windows, check the Advanced format of the playback and recording devices you use and make sure they are not switching between unrelated sample rates during the session.

If one source has a stable delay, open Advanced Audio Properties from the Audio Mixer and adjust its Sync Offset in small increments, then make another test recording. A sync offset is best used for a consistent delay; if sync gets progressively worse over time, look for device/driver problems, sample-rate mismatch, or system overload instead of continually adding more offset.

Capture cards can introduce their own video or audio latency. Update the device driver/firmware and test the capture-card source separately before combining it with webcam and microphone sources.

4. OBS Says “Encoding Overloaded” or the Recording Is Choppy

The warning means OBS cannot render/encode frames fast enough with the current workload. On Windows, try Run as administrator first. Then close unnecessary GPU-heavy programs and, for gameplay, cap the game frame rate or enable V-Sync so the game does not consume all available GPU resources.

Next, lower the workload inside OBS: reduce the Output (Scaled) Resolution, change 60 FPS to 30 FPS, simplify complex scenes, reduce browser sources and filters, or use a faster encoder preset. If a supported hardware encoder is available, trying NVENC/AMD/Quick Sync can move much of the encoding work away from the CPU.

Do not assume that maximum game graphics plus an uncapped frame rate should still leave enough resources for OBS. A game can look perfectly smooth while OBS drops frames because the GPU has no spare time for scene compositing and encoding.

5. OBS Shows “An Unspecified Error Occurred While Recording”

This message does not point to one single cause, so check the safe, common failure points first.

Check the recording path and free space. Choose a local folder you can write to, avoid a disconnected external/network drive, and make sure the destination has enough space.

Try another encoder. A hardware encoder can fail after a graphics-driver change or when another program is using the encoder. Update the GPU driver, restart the computer, and temporarily switch between a hardware encoder and x264 to isolate the cause.

Update or reinstall OBS from the official installer. If program components are damaged, a clean reinstall is safer than downloading individual DLL files from third-party DLL sites. Also install pending operating-system updates and current device drivers.

Check the OBS log. Open Help > Log Files after reproducing the error. The log can reveal an encoder initialization failure, invalid output path, device problem, or another specific cause that the generic error dialog does not show.

6. OBS Recording Files Are Too Large

Recording size is mainly driven by duration, quality/bitrate, resolution, frame rate, codec, and the complexity of the content. A fast 1080p60 game naturally needs more data than a mostly static 1080p30 presentation.

For a quick adjustment, use Simple Output Mode and choose High Quality, Medium File Size instead of an unnecessarily lossless option. In Advanced mode, quality-based rate control is usually more practical for local recording than forcing one low fixed bitrate for every type of content. With CQP/CRF-style controls, a higher quality-number generally means more compression, a smaller file, and lower quality.

You can also reduce output resolution or FPS. More efficient codecs such as HEVC or AV1 can save space at similar visual quality when your hardware and editing/playback workflow support them, but H.264 remains easier to play and edit on older devices and software.

If a recording is already too large, you do not have to record it again. You can compress or transcode the finished OBS file afterward, keeping the original until you confirm the smaller copy looks and sounds acceptable.
