Powerful gaming performance aside, PlayStation consoles can also work as home media players. But DVD playback is not the same on every model. The PS5 console with a disc drive can play DVDs directly, while a PS5 Digital Edition needs either a compatible add-on disc drive or a converted digital video file.
This guide explains how DVD playback works on PS5, PS4, PS4 Pro, PS3, and PSP, why some discs fail to play, and how to convert your own DVDs to a PlayStation-friendly format for USB or Memory Stick playback.

Yes, but it depends on your PS5 model. A PS5 console with a built-in Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive can play DVD discs. Insert the DVD into the disc slot, open Disc Player from the media home, and the movie should start as long as the disc is supported and region-compatible.
The original PS5 Digital Edition (CFI-1000 model group) cannot play DVDs because it has no optical drive and does not support disc-based games or media. For this model, the practical workaround is to convert your DVD to a PS5-supported video file and play it from a USB drive.
For newer models, the answer is a little different. Some PS5 Digital Edition consoles from the CFI-2000/CFI-2100 model groups and the PS5 Pro model group can use Sony's compatible add-on Disc Drive, sold separately. After the drive is paired through the Internet, it can read 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs, Blu-ray discs, and DVDs. Without a disc drive, however, they still cannot read physical DVDs.
For USB playback, PS5 supports a limited set of video formats, mainly MKV (H.264/AAC), MP4 (H.264/AAC), and WebM (VP9/Opus), with a maximum video resolution of 3840 x 2160. That is why converting DVD to a compatible MP4 or PS5 preset is usually the safest option.

PS4 and PS4 Pro: Both can play DVD and Blu-ray discs. The important difference is that a PS4 console must enable the disc playback feature over the Internet the first time you play a DVD or Blu-ray. After that one-time activation, it does not need to stay online for normal disc playback.
PS3: PS3 can play DVD-Video directly through its built-in optical drive. Sony also lists DVD-ROM, DVD-R/RW, and DVD+R/RW among supported DVD media. Region restrictions, parental controls, damaged discs, or unusual disc authoring can still prevent playback.
PSP: PSP cannot play DVD discs directly because it has no DVD drive. It used UMD discs for physical media and Memory Stick Duo/PRO Duo for storage. To watch a DVD movie on PSP, convert the DVD to a PSP-friendly video first, usually MP4 with H.264/MPEG-4 video and AAC audio.
If your PlayStation has an optical disc drive but still refuses to play a DVD, the cause is usually one of the following:
1. Wrong console model or missing drive. PS5 Digital Edition and PSP cannot read physical DVDs without extra help. A PS5 Slim Digital Edition or PS5 Pro also needs a compatible external Disc Drive to read DVD discs. PS3 already has an optical drive, so repeated read failures on different discs can point to disc condition or drive issues instead.
2. First-time setup is not finished. PS4 and PS4 Pro need an Internet connection once to enable Blu-ray/DVD playback. Newer PS5 add-on Disc Drives also require Internet pairing during setup.
3. DVD region mismatch. Many commercial DVDs are region-locked. For example, a Region 2 DVD may not play on a Region 1 console, even though the console can play DVDs in general.
4. Unsupported, unfinalized, or unsafe disc type. Recordable DVDs may fail if they were not finalized or were authored in an incompatible way. Avoid non-circular, cracked, repaired, or heavily damaged discs, and do not use discs with loose stickers or paper labels.
5. Disc quality, scratches, or unusual encoding. Dust, fingerprints, scratches, poor burning quality, recording-device differences, or some copy-protection/authoring methods may stop a movie from loading correctly.
6. USB format confusion. A DVD folder, VIDEO_TS folder, or ISO image copied to a USB drive is not the same as a normal PS5/PS4/PS3 supported video file. For broad compatibility across these consoles, convert the movie to a compatible file such as MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio.
When direct playback fails because of region code, unsupported disc authoring, or a disc-free console, a digital copy is often easier to manage. Step 1. When the conversion is complete, connect the USB drive to your PC. Make sure the USB drive is formatted with either the exFAT or FAT32 file system.
Step 2. Create a folder in the root directory of the USB drive. Transfer the converted video files into the folder.
Step 3. Connect the USB drive to your PS5 console, select Media Gallery from the games home, and then select USB.
Step 4. Locate the folder you created, select the converted DVD video, and start watching from USB on PS5.
Step 1. Format the USB drive as exFAT or FAT32 and create a folder in the root directory.
Step 2. Put the converted MP4, MKV, AVI, MPEG-2 PS/TS, AVCHD, or XAVC S file into that folder. If you are not sure which format to use, MP4 H.264/AAC is the easiest choice.

Note: If this is the first time you use PS4 as a disc player, connect it to the Internet once to enable Blu-ray/DVD playback. This activation is for physical discs, not for normal USB video playback.

Step 2. Use a PS3-compatible file. Sony lists MP4 with H.264/MPEG-4 AVC video and AAC LC audio among supported formats, so an H.264/AAC MP4 made with the PS4 output profile is a convenient choice.
Step 3. Connect the USB drive to PS3, go to Video, select the USB Device, and open the movie. If the file is stored outside the VIDEO folder, press the Triangle button and choose Display All.
Step 4. Play the video directly from USB or copy it to the PS3 system storage if you prefer.
Step 1. Convert the DVD to the PSP profile or to a PSP-friendly MP4 file.
Step 2. Connect your PSP or Memory Stick to the computer through USB mode.
Step 3. Copy the converted video to the VIDEO folder on the Memory Stick. If the folder does not exist, create one in the root directory.
Step 4. Disconnect safely, go to Video on PSP, and play the movie from the Memory Stick.
