Formatting DVDs – How to Format DVD in Windows Easily

DVDs are an effective storage medium because they are less prone to failure than hard drives. RW stands for Rewrite, and DVD-RW discs allow you to format and rewrite data multiple times. But before "rewriting" a DVD-RW, you should erase the data already on the disc for reuse. This process also allows you to reformat the disc, which can also change how and where you're able to use it based on your data needs. The process of erasing and formatting a DVD-RW is fairly simple. Now, let’s look at the details.

Step 1: Insert the DVD RW into the DVD drive of your computer. Wait a few seconds to let the disc load.

Step 2: Open "Computer" (or "This PC") and click your disc drive’s icon.

Step 3: Right-click on the DVD-RW icon. In the toolbar, click "Format" and follow the instructions.

Step 4: Select a file system. Click the "File system" drop-down box, then click one of the following file systems:

UDF 1.50 - For use on XP and older.

UDF 2.00 - For use on Vista and later.

UDF 2.01 (default) - For use on Vista and later.

UDF 2.50 - For use on Vista and later.

Step 5: Click "Start", then click "OK". Doing so will begin formatting the DVD with your selected file system.

Step 6: Click "OK" when prompted. This will start formatting the disc.

Step 1: Insert the rewritable disc into your computer's CD, DVD, or Blu-ray Disc burner.

Step 2: Click "Start" > "Computer" > "Windows Explorer" then click the DVD icon. This will open the disc burning interface. In the toolbar, click "Erase this disc" and follow the instructions.

Step 3: Open the "Burn files to disc" window. This appears when you either insert a blank disc or double-click the blank disc in the computer window.

Step 4: Enter a name for the disc. Then, select the format you want to use.

Step 5: Once you've selected your formatting method, the drive will prepare the disc.

Step 6: After it's finished, you'll be able to start adding files to the disc.
