Does Wii U Play DVD? How to Watch DVDs on Wii U and Wii

Author: Kevincy by Kevincy

Updated on Jul 14, 2026

Neither Wii U nor Wii can play a movie DVD directly. Wii U only recognizes Wii U and Wii Game Discs, while Wii does not include official DVD-Video playback either. But there are still ways to watch DVD videos on Wii and Wii U. Converting a DVD creates a digital video that you can stream to Wii U or open through the Wii Photo Channel. Keep reading and explore more details.

Can Wii U or Wii Play DVDs?

No. Wii U does not support DVD, Blu-ray, or CD playback. Its disc drive is designed for Wii U and Wii Game Discs. The original Wii also does not officially play DVD-Video, Blu-ray, audio CDs, or ordinary movie files from a USB drive.

The useful workaround is different for each console. Wii U's Internet Browser can play a compatible MP4 stream from a computer on the same network. Wii's official Photo Channel can open a very limited type of video from an SD or SDHC card. A modified Wii can also use the unofficial WiiMC media player to open more formats from SD, USB, or a network source. The table below shows the difference.

WiiNoUse Photo Channel, or WiiMC on a console that already has Homebrew ChannelMotion JPEG AVI/MOV for Photo Channel; WiiMC supports more SD/USB media formats

Important: Putting an MP4 on a USB drive does not make it playable through the standard Wii U or Wii menu. For the official Wii Photo Channel method, choosing AVI or MOV alone is not enough—the codec inside the file must also match the console's requirements. WiiMC is a separate, unofficial homebrew application.

Part 1: Convert the DVD to a Wii U-Compatible MP4

Since Wii U cannot read a movie DVD, first digitize the DVD on a Windows PC. WonderFox DVD Ripper Pro can load DVD discs, ISO images, and VIDEO_TS folders, identify the main movie, and convert it to a browser-friendly MP4. For the Wii U Internet Browser, use H.264 video and AAC audio inside an MP4 container.

How to Convert a DVD for Wii U Browser Playback

Load DVD into WonderFox DVD Ripper Pro

Step 1: Load the DVD

Install and open WonderFox DVD Ripper Pro on a Windows PC. Insert the disc, click DVD Disc, and select the correct drive. The program will analyze the content and normally select the main movie automatically. Check the title, audio track, and subtitles before continuing.

Choose MP4 and Check the Codecs

Step 2: Choose MP4 and Check the Codecs

Open the Output Format menu and choose MP4 under the Video category. Then open Settings and make sure the video encoder is H.264 and the audio encoder is AAC. Keeping the original DVD resolution and a normal frame rate is usually more reliable than unnecessarily enlarging the video.

Start the Conversion

Step 3: Start the Conversion

Choose an output folder by clicking the three-dot icon at the bottom of the interface. Finally, click RUN.

When the conversion finishes, play the MP4 on the PC first to confirm that the picture, audio, and subtitles are correct.

Disclaimer: WonderFox does not advocate copyright infringement. Only digitize discs you are legally allowed to copy, and do not reproduce, distribute, or commercially use the converted content without authorization.

Part 2: Stream the Converted MP4 to Wii U

Wii U does not include a normal USB or SD video player. Instead, serve the MP4 from a computer and open it in the Wii U Internet Browser. The PC and Wii U must be connected to the same router.

Step 1. Put the converted MP4 in its own folder on the PC.

Step 2. Start a simple local HTTP file server in that folder. For example, if Python 3 is installed, open the folder in File Explorer, type cmd in the address bar, press Enter, and run py -m http.server 8000. You may also use another local HTTP server that displays a simple file list.

Step 3. Run ipconfig in Command Prompt and note the PC's IPv4 address, such as 192.168.1.25. Allow the server through Windows Firewall on your private network if prompted.

Step 4. Open the Wii U Internet Browser and visit an address like http://192.168.1.25:8000/. Select the MP4 file to start playback.

Step 5. When finished, return to Command Prompt and press Ctrl + C to stop the local server.

About Plex: Some guides recommend opening Plex Web on Wii U. The console's browser is now very old, and modern Plex pages may not load or sign in correctly. A basic local HTTP page is usually simpler and avoids depending on the current Plex interface.

Part 3: Watch a Digitized DVD on Nintendo Wii

The Wii method is not the same as the Wii U method. Wii Photo Channel can play video from an SD or SDHC card, but its format support is extremely narrow: AVI or MOV encoded with Motion JPEG, at no more than 848 x 480.

Step 1. Use WonderFox DVD Ripper Pro to convert a DVD to a video file.

Step 2. Convert the output file to AVI using XMedia Recode.

Step 3. Choose AVI or MOV as the output format. Open the Video tab, select MJPEG/Motion JPEG as the video encoder.

Step 4. Choose an output folder and start the conversion. Convert a short sample first. Photo Channel may reject some files or play them without sound, so testing before converting a full movie can save time.

Step 5. Copy the compatible AVI or MOV file to an SD/SDHC card, insert the card into the Wii, open Photo Channel, and select the video.

This route is suitable for short clips and occasional viewing. Motion JPEG creates much larger files than H.264, and the 848 x 480 limit makes it less convenient for a full DVD collection.

Alternative: Play Videos from SD or USB with WiiMC

WiiMC is an unofficial media player for Wii. It can browse and play audio and video from an SD card, a compatible USB storage device, or a network source, and it supports substantially more formats than Photo Channel. This option applies to the original Wii, not the standard Wii U mode.

Before you begin: The Wii must already be modified and have Homebrew Channel installed. WiiMC is not provided or supported by Nintendo. Do not follow random or outdated system-modification packages; use a reputable current guide and understand the possibility of software problems or loss of official support.

Step 1. Download the WiiMC new-install package from its official project site and extract the archive on your computer.

Step 2. Copy the extracted apps folder to the root of the SD card. If the card already has an apps folder, merge the folders rather than deleting the applications already stored there.

Step 3. Copy the converted movie or other media files to the SD card. WiiMC can also read supported USB storage, although device and filesystem compatibility can vary.

Step 4. Insert the SD card into the Wii, open Homebrew Channel, select WiiMC, and use the Wii Remote to browse to the file and start playback.

Playback limits: WiiMC documentation indicates that H.264 files up to about 720 x 480 often play correctly, while the Wii cannot provide true HD playback above 480p. There is no single bitrate that guarantees smooth video. Resolution, codec profile, frame rate, audio, and scene complexity all matter, so high-bitrate or demanding files may stutter or drop frames. For better results, use standard-definition video, moderate bitrate, and compatible stereo audio, then test a short sample first.

WiiMC has also offered DVD playback on some older Wii drive revisions, but newer Wii drives are incompatible. Because support depends on hardware and unofficial software, digitizing the DVD and playing the file from SD or USB is the more predictable WiiMC workflow.

FAQs

Q1. Can Wii U play Blu-ray discs or audio CDs?

No. Wii U supports Wii U and Wii Game Discs, not DVD, Blu-ray, or CD media.

Q2. Can I connect a DVD player directly to Wii U?

No. Wii U has HDMI output, not HDMI input. Connect the DVD player to a separate input on the TV instead.

Q3. Can Wii U play an MP4 from a USB drive or SD card?

Not through an official general-purpose media player. A compatible MP4 can instead be streamed to the Wii U Internet Browser from a computer on the same network.

Q4. Why does an MP4 fail to play in the Wii U browser?

The container may be MP4 while the codecs are incompatible. Re-encode it with H.264 video and AAC audio, lower the bitrate or resolution, and try AAC stereo.

Q5. Does Wii play an ordinary AVI or MOV file?

Not necessarily. Photo Channel requires Motion JPEG video in AVI or MOV, with a maximum size of 848 x 480. Other codecs inside the same containers may show an error.

Q6. Can WiiMC play videos from an SD card or USB drive?

Yes, on a Wii that already has Homebrew Channel installed. WiiMC can access media from SD, compatible USB storage, and network sources. Because the Wii is limited to standard-definition output and modest decoding power, demanding or high-bitrate files may stutter. Converting the video to 480p or lower and testing a sample is recommended.

Q7. Can Homebrew make Wii or Wii U play a movie DVD directly?

WiiMC has supported DVD menus and DVD-Video playback on some older Wii drives, but many newer Wii drive revisions cannot read movie DVDs. Wii U is not a reliable DVD player through this route. Homebrew is unofficial and carries compatibility and system-modification risks, so a digitized file or standalone disc player is more dependable.

In Summary

Wii U and Wii do not function as official movie DVD players. For Wii U, convert the disc to H.264/AAC MP4 and stream it from a local computer to the browser. On an unmodified Wii, prepare a Motion JPEG AVI/MOV file within 848 x 480 and open it from an SD card in Photo Channel. A Wii that already has Homebrew Channel can instead use WiiMC to play a wider range of media from SD, USB, or the local network.

For the easiest movie-night setup, a standalone DVD/Blu-ray player or another supported media device is still more dependable. WiiMC remains an unofficial option with hardware and performance limitations, while conversion makes the source DVD easier to use across all of these workflows.
