What is a .vid file? How to open it? And how to change .vid to .mp4? This article has got all the answers to these problems. Read on to know more!
There are times you might notice that the video you downloaded is saved in the VID format, which can neither be played nor edited in your media player and editor. If you are now holding such a file and wonder how to open it, please read through this article that will tell you everything about the VID format, including what is a .vid file, how to open a .vid file, and how to change .vid to .mp4.
The VID format is a generic video format. The video data stored in the VID format could actually be an MP4 video and many other possible videos. You can think of the .vid format as a skin shrouding the real identity underneath, which, in this case, could be any common video format you can think of, such as MP4, MOV, AVI...
The VID file format has been around for many years. But seldom programs use this format now, and there are only a few media players can directly open this kind of file. The known software that can open a .vid file is VLC Media Player and Windows Media Player. You can drop the .vid file directly into the two media players or right-click on the .vid file > Open with... > select either program to open it (make sure you have at least one of the players preinstalled on your device).
If your device does not support the two media players, or you want to edit the VID file, then you have to convert the .vid file to .mp4, or any other common video format that can be supported by most platforms. I’ll cover it in the next part.
There are two ways to change .vid file to .mp4 and other video formats.
ONE WAY is to rename the file extension from .vid to .mp4. It is the easiest way, and if everything went well, you could play the modified MP4 file without a hitch. But if you had hard luck, you can try the second approach.
THE SECOND WAY is to convert the .vid file to .mp4 using a video converter. I do not recommend using online video converters because most online converters, such as Zamzar, do not support this format. And those that do support, however, have a very tight limit on the upload size. So here I will introduce instead a desktop free video converter called WonderFox Free HD Video Converter Factory. It is one of the few converters that can recognize this format, and it has no limit on the file size. Most importantly, it is completely free and safe, and simple to use. I’ll show you how to convert files using this converter in the following part:
1. Launch WonderFox Free HD Video Converter Factory and open the Converter.
2. Click on “+ Add Files” to import the VID file into this converter. Or you can directly drag and drop the file into this program.
3. Click on the right side format image and select MP4 format under the Video section. You can also choose any other format you prefer.
4. Hit “Run” to start conversion. Your video will be ready in minutes.
That’s all the information about the VID file. Hope you’ll find this article helpful. Thanks for reading!
