Does Apple TV Play DVDs?

Q: I own a large collection of movie DVDs. These are conventional pre-recorded DVDs that I purchased in retail stores. Can the USB SuperDrive work on Apple TV (Gen 4) playing DVDs?

Step 1. Load DVD Sources into the Apple TV Converter

Just insert the DVD disc into the internal/external DVD player on your Mac, play the DVD using VLC, and then stream and mirror your display to the Apple TV in the same network. Please note that with built-in Apple DVD player software, you aren't allowed to stream protected DVD content, or you may meet the problems like DVD player encountered a system error and grey checkerboard pattern screen.

AirPlay Mirroring requires a second-generation Apple TV or later and it’s supported on iMac (Mid 2011 or newer), Mac mini (Mid 2011 or newer), MacBook Air (Mid 2011 or newer), and MacBook Pro (Early 2011 or newer). When there is an Apple TV in the same network as your Mac, you will see the AirPlay menu in the menu bar. Click “Mirror Apple TV” and the AirPlay Mirroring will start. Then you can play a DVD on PC, which will be also display on your Apple TV synchronously.
