How to Make GIF with Sound?

Author by Michelle

Updated at Aug 5th, 2020

"GIF" with sound can add flavor to the performance of using a voiceless GIF plainly. Yet, to make GIF with sound, there are a few workarounds. First, you need to create a GIF, then you add music to GIF to make a talking "GIF" happen. Use the tool needed here and get started:

Before getting into the detailed information of this article, I think it should be made clear that there is no way to really make GIF with sound, at least not now. GIF is only an image format that does not support audio file and the GIFs with sound you see on the Internet are actually looped short-clip videos that look like GIFs. Yet that kind of video reached the same effect as a talking GIF. So this article is more of a tutorial on how to make that kind of “GIF”. Follow the next two parts to know “how to make a GIF with sound”.

Part 1. Create Animated GIF from Videos or Photos

A desktop GIF maker is highly recommended here as the online ones are usually subjected to uploading size, format restrictions, and whatnot. You can easily find many GIF makers throughout the web, but reaching the right one might take some time. If it's OK with you, you can have a try at the software I often use. It's a program named WonderFox HD Video Converter Factory Pro that does more than just making a GIF, it is also able to convert, record, and download videos and these functions together help me a lot in getting my ideal source files to make one satisfying GIF. I will show you how to convert video to GIF through this program in the following tutorial.

Import Video into GIF Maker

Step 1. Import Video into GIF Maker

Before start, please free downloadfree download the software.

Launch the software and select “GIF Maker” > “Convert Video to GIF”. In the new interface, click “+Add Video” on the top-left corner to import your source video.

Alter GIF Parameters

Step 2. Video to GIF Preparations

1.Trim the Wanted Video Parts: On the left player, drag the blue sliders on the timeline to select duration or input a specific time length in the “Start” and “End” box. The play icon under the timeline allows you to preview the selection and the two buttons next to it enable you to view the previous and next frame.

2.Personalize GIF Parameters: On the right side, you can change or keep the original resolution, customize the frame rate (the higher the frame rate, the smoother the GIF will get), and choose an output quality.

Step 3. Convert Video to GIF

When all is set, you can directly hit “Create GIF” to start GIF-making. But before that, you could click on the inverted triangle beside the folder icon to choose an output destination for your GIF.

Tips: To make GIFs from photos, the steps are very much like the way to make GIFs from video, simply by importing multiple photos into "Convert Photos to GIF", changing necessary parameters, and outputting as GIF.

Part 2. Add Music to GIF

Since the GIF has been already made, it is more convenient to use online tools to add sound to GIF and then directly share it to social media. Kapwing is the tool I find extremely easy and safe to use. It has an all-in-one online suite that allows you to work on the photo, video, and audio files. The below steps will illustrate how to add music to GIF in Kapwing.

Upload GIF

Step 1. Visit https://www.kapwing.com/studio/editor, click on the dotted frame to upload or drop the just-made GIF straightly into this page.

Step 2. On the top menu bar, click "Audio" which is the third one from the right. If you already have an audio file, you could directly click to upload or drop it into the target place. But if you haven't got one yet, you can also paste a desired video/audio URL into the blank space that will automatically analyze the URL into an audio file. Or, you could record audio from your mic on spot. After uploading the audio file, you could continue to trim the audio and adjust the sound volume. When everything is ready, click "Done" in the red button to keep the adjustments.

Download or Share GIF

Step 3. Return to the main interface and click "PUBLISH" on the top right corner. Wait a few moments until the file is processed. Then you will see several options for you to "Download" or share it directly to Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

Tips: The products you made with Kapwing have its watermark embedded within, you need to sign in to remove the watermark.

At last...

Using two tools to create GIF with sound seems to be cumbersome to some extent, but that’s the only way to get the wanted result. If you have other ideas, please feel free to share with us!
