MKV iMovie Conversion – How to Import MKV to iMovie Properly

Author by Oswald

Updated on Aug 25, 2023

There are some specific iMovie supported file types, yet MKV is not one of them. You can’t import MKV into iMovie directly since iMovie doesn’t recognize it, not to mention iMovie MKV editing. So in this article, I’ll show you how to convert MKV to iMovie compatible formats properly for editing in iMovie smoothly. Free download the recommened iMovie converter here and read the following to start conversion.

iMovie was designed to be a professional video editing product sold to Mac and iOS users in the first place but has since become free bundled with Mac computers. iMovie, that free yet powerful editing tool, is so not to be missed for Apple users, especially those who are into video editing.

I understand that you’ve failed to put MKV files in iMovie somehow. The thing is, the range of the video formats that iMovie supports (exactly the same as QuickTime) is a bit narrow, or rather, unacceptable – and doesn’t cover MKV.

What video formats does iMovie support?

DV, HDV, AVCHD, Apple Intermediate Codec, Apple Animation Codec, Apple ProRes, Motion JPEG/A, iFrame, H.264, HEVC, MPEG-4 SP, XAVC-S

The solution is simple.  Just convert MKV to iMovie supported files. To keep your video files data intact, maintain the videos in good quality, and convert them in an efficient process, you’ve got to be wary and choose a reliable video converter. And here’s one I highly recommend: WonderFox HD Video Converter Factory Pro.

How Exactly to Make MKV Compatible with iMovie with WonderFox HD Video Converter Factory Pro

Convert MKV to an iMovie-friendly format: MP4 or MOV with H.264 codecs, Apple ProRes, etc. I recommend.

Even if your file seems to be supported by iMovie because its file extension says so, its unsupported video codec may retard the work of MKV iMovie importing. Transcoding MKV files to H.264 is the recommended method.

I’ll show you how to manage the task with WonderFox HD Video Converter Factory Pro. It’s super easy and fast, check it out.
