Does Ripping a DVD Damage It?

Many people still have misconceptions about DVD ripping. What does ripping a DVD mean exactly? Simply put, it is the process of extracting video or audio files from a DVD disc to digital files. After ripping, you can play the ripped data (usually of small file size) on portable devices without a DVD player. As most modern DVD discs come with copy protection methods, DVD ripping also includes circumventing DVD copy protection for accessing DVD contents. But don’t worry. Just as you play a DVD, ripping a DVD doesn’t cause any physical damage to the DVD disc and it never alters the data inside. When you happen to meet some hiccups on playing a DVDrip movie, it’s most likely that your DVD player or drive doesn't function well.

Yet, one thing to note is that, though ripping a DVD won’t damage the disc, the overheated DVD drive caused by long ripping process may still affect the lifespan of your DVDs.
