What Is a CUE Sheet and When Do You Need a CUE Splitter?

A common case is an album saved as one large audio file together with a small .cue file. The CUE sheet contains track titles, performers, and INDEX time positions that tell compatible software where each song begins. The same idea can be used with different source formats, including FLAC, APE, WAV, MP3, and others supported by the splitter.

The important distinction is that you are not really “splitting the CUE file.” The CUE sheet is only the map. The splitter reads that map and separates the associated audio file into individual tracks. Some tools can cut compatible audio streams directly without decoding and re-encoding; others create the tracks through a conversion process.

If you only have one long audio file and no usable CUE sheet, these methods cannot automatically identify the original track boundaries. In that case, you need to mark and cut the sections manually with an audio cutter/splitter.

Before You Split: Check the CUE Sheet and Audio File

Before blaming the splitter when a CUE file will not load, check the CUE sheet and its companion audio file first. Open the .cue file in a text editor and look for the FILE line. The file name there should match the actual audio file. Keeping the CUE sheet and audio file in the same folder is the simplest setup.

For example, if the sheet says FILE "Album.flac" WAVE but the real file was renamed to Album (Disc 1).flac, the splitter may report a missing file or show no playable tracks. Correct the file name in the CUE sheet or rename the audio file to match. Also make sure you have the complete audio image rather than only the .cue file.

Step 1. Open foobar2000 and click File > Open to import the .cue file. You can also drag the CUE file directly into the player. If the referenced audio file is found, the album should appear as individual track entries.

Step 2. Press Ctrl+A to select the tracks you want to export, right-click the selection, and choose Convert > Quick convert.

Step 3. Choose an output format. If you want to keep lossless audio lossless, select a lossless format such as FLAC or WAV. Choose MP3, AAC, Opus, or another lossy format only when smaller files or device compatibility matter more.

Step 4. Choose the output folder and start the conversion. foobar2000 decodes the source and writes new files, so this method is a conversion workflow rather than a bit-for-bit stream split.

Cue Splitter 2 - Medieval CUE Splitter (UWP)

Medieval CUE Splitter is a free CUE-based audio splitting tool from Medieval Software. For Windows 10/11 users, the developer now offers a UWP edition, currently version 2.0.8. It can split supported source files directly according to the associated CUE sheet without decoding and re-encoding the audio data. The UWP version officially supports WAVE, MP3, FLAC, and APE, and also provides file-mask naming, tag handling, audio scanning, and Light/Dark themes. Step 1. Install and open Medieval CUE Splitter, then load the .cue file from the main page. Keep the matching source audio file available in the location referenced by the CUE sheet.

Step 3. Choose the destination and any output naming options you want to use.

Step 4. Start the split. For supported formats, the app separates the source into individual tracks without an audio re-encode.

Cue Splitter 3 – CUETools

CUETools is a free Windows toolkit built around lossless CD images, CUE sheets, conversion, and verification. The current release is CUETools 2.2.6. It is portable: download the ZIP archive, extract the entire folder, and run CUETools.exe. Microsoft .NET Framework and Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio are required. Step 1. Extract the downloaded CUETools archive and run CUETools.exe.

Step 2. Click the button next to Input and select the .cue file. Then set the Output folder.

Step 3. Select Encode under Action and Tracks under Mode.

Step 4. Under Audio Output, choose Lossless and the format you want for the separated tracks.

Step 5. Click Go and confirm the operation to create the individual track files.


CUETools is especially useful when you want to keep an album in a lossless workflow. For example, a single FLAC image plus CUE can be written out as separate FLAC tracks without audible quality loss, although the files are newly encoded rather than copied bit-for-bit.
